Loma Linda tops colleges for producing graduates who make the world a better place

>>LOMA LINDA, CA – Sept. 11, 2014 – Loma Linda University (LLU) topped all other colleges and universities in the nation for graduates who find meaning in their work, based on a survey of 1.4 million college and university alumni, according to PayScale.com.

Every year, PayScale, an organization that provides salary, benefits and compensation information, surveys alumni from over 1,000 U.S. colleges and universities. In addition to collecting data on income, the company also asks: Does your work make the world a better place? This year, LLU ranked in the number one spot; 91 percent of LLU graduates said working in their jobs helped to “make the world a better place.”

In the same survey, LLU was also ranked among the top for the highest starting salary.

The Atlantic magazine featured LLU and the rankings in a story here.

The Washington Post covered the story, as well, here.

“I’m delighted by this ranking,” said Richard H. Hart, MD, DrPH, president of Loma Linda University Health. “As our alumni are living out our mission every day, bringing wholeness to all the ends of the earth, this recognition makes me proud of the heritage of our university, the spirit and dedication of our faculty and staff, and all of our medical professionals who train our students for lives of real service—locally, nationally and globally.”

The ranking elevates Loma Linda far ahead of Ivy League schools such as Harvard, Yale and Princeton, often ranked in the top three spots on some college surveys. In the PayScale alumni survey on meaningful jobs, only about 65 percent of the three Ivies’ alumni answered yes to the question.

The next two institutions were University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas (88 percent) and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (86 percent).

Many of our USC alumni are also graduates of Loma Linda University, one of our three Adventist sister institutions of higher education in California; and several serve on its faculty and staff, including the President of our North America Alumni Chapter, Ps. Dr. Curtis Fox, who, among other roles, is  Department Chair, Counseling & Family Sciences in the School of Behavioral Health.  This recognition speaks reams about our Adventist "mission-focussed" approach to education worldwide.

New York Alumni Hosts Alumni Day, Chooses New Officers

"The New York Chapter of the USC North American Alumni Association held their annual Alumni Day on August 30, 2014, at the Hanson Place SDA Church.  Several alumni from other Chapters joined the local alumni for a day of worship, praise and fellowship.

The sermon was delivered by Dr. Sylvan Lashley, Dean of the School of Graduate, Extensions, Continuing and Professional Studies (GCAPS) at the University of the Southern Caribbean. University President, Dr. Clinton Valley was also in attendance. He called for an offering and led out in the afternoon's discussion on USC's programmes and initiatives. The University's current fund-raising project is the construction of the new University Auditorium, which is in the early construction phase.

While the Hanson Place worship was in progress, Pastor Lester Parkinson, Director of Resource Development at USC, continued the University's strategy of visiting selected churches for USC fund-raising purposes.  He spoke at the New Life Church with Pastor Nigel Lewis. Dr. Valley also had the opportunity to visit New Life and share the vision and opportunities at USC.

On Sunday morning, the New York Chapter met to choose officers for the next two years.  The USC contingent was in attendance.  After an extended period at the helm, Dr. Lionel Williams chose to pass the mantle to another leader.  The University thanks Dr. Williams and all the outgoing officers for their dedicated service."

PUC Gets Record USD 2.4 Million Gift

"California-based Pacific Union College has received the single largest private gift in its 132 history, a $2.4 million donation that will be used to launch a major philanthropic drive.

The unrestricted contribution from the estate of the late philanthropist Stephen Ball will provide the seed money for the newly established Heritage Campaign, which will support a variety of unspecified college projects.

“Our campaign will affirm PUC’s heritage of excellence and innovation, forge a legacy of service for our world, and support a compelling learning community,” said Walter Collins, the college’s vice president for advancement and alumni relations. “Mr. Ball’s generosity will be the bright spark that helps bring this vision to life.”

Ball lived in St. Helena, a town located 8 miles north of the college, for the 20 years until his death in April. He was born in 1944 in Berkeley, California, and attended Armstrong College, a private liberal arts college in Berkeley, the college said.

“Stephen Ball understood the mission and the impact that Pacific Union College has had throughout its history, and we’re honored to receive this gift at a time when our college in on a historic upward trajectory,” college President Heather Knight said in a statement.

The college, founded as Healdsburg College in 1882, currently has its largest enrollment in 24 years, a total of 1,678 students, and its freshman to sophomore retention rate has grown from 71 percent to 85 percent over the past three years.

Susan Baxter, a longtime friend of Ball, said the philanthropist made the donation because he backed Pacific Union College’s mission statement to “offer an excellent Christ-centered education that prepares its students for productive lives of useful human service and uncompromising personal integrity.”

“Stephen was a generous soul, and he appreciated those around him who made a difference in the community,” Baxter said in the statement. “Pacific Union College is such an asset to the Napa Valley community, and Stephen wanted to support the mission of the college.”"

Global Trends In Adventist Education

A presentation by Dr. Humberto Rasi at the 2014 International Conference of Adventist University and College Presidents held at the church's headquarters in Silver Spring, MD, USA on March 24 - 27, 2014.

According to the Adventist Review: "The conference, sponsored by the Education Department of the General Conference, brought together more than 150 college and university presidents, education directors, and GC administrators from each of the 13 administrative units of the world church.

According to Lisa Beardsley-Hardy, director of Education for the General Conference, the conference was planned to highlight four priorities essential for the success of Adventist tertiary education: reinforce Adventist identity and mission; strengthen leadership and administration; increase the capacity of all teachers to carry out the redemptive purposes of Adventist education in their classes; and provide opportunities through which students may become more dedicated disciples of Jesus Christ."
